Government Announces Employment Law Reforms
Siginificant employment law reforms have today been announced by Chancellor George Osborne, who has stated that the proposed changes intend to reduce the number of employment tribunal claims and boost the economy.
Importantly the qualifying period for bringing an unfair dismissal claim will be increased from one year to two years with effect from 1 April 2012. further information can be found on the Business Innovation and Skills website.
In addition, under further employment law reforms fees will be introduced for tribunal claims which is likely to include:
• an upfront fee of £250 when lodging a claim;
• a further fee of £1,000 payable by a Claimant when the hearing is listed;
• higher fees if the claim is valued over £30,000;
The fee will be refunded if the Claimant wins, but forfeited if they lose and there will be provision of the fee to be waived for those with the inability to pay.
